“I’d always dreamt of a driving holiday in Ireland, but was concerned that I wouldn’t know how to put the trip together – it’s such a long way to go after all! And, then there’s the challenge of driving on the opposite side of the road!”
Now there is some very good news for anyone considering taking a road trip around
Ireland – everything you have ever been worried about or wondered about in a self-drive
vacation to Ireland has been uncovered in ‘Cruising Ireland’ and its companion video – Right
Side Drive, Left Side Road’.
Welcome
You’re just moments away from learning how to organize a trip to Ireland and enjoying the beautiful scenary and culture that can only be truly experienced by driving yourself around the country – and what’s more, it’s easier than you’ve ever imagined! We’ll even help you learn how to drive on the “wrong side of the road!”
From: Bill and Jenny Sankey, experienced Ireland car-travellers from Australia
Dear friend and future Ireland vacationers,
If you’ve ever thought how exciting and beautiful it would be to travel Ireland’s countryside by car, and experience the ultimate road trip found only in the Emerald Isle- but have never followed through with the planning of your trip because you just didn’t know where to start, then you’ve come to the right place.
Here’s why…
We are Bill and Jenny Sankey, and not too long ago we were in the same position that you’re in now. We really wanted to travel around Ireland, but were nervous about driving around a country we had never been in before. We had traveled extensively before, but typically relied on public transportation or group tours when in other locations. We knew to really experience Ireland and all of it’s beauty, we would need to drive ourselves. So we set to work planning our ultimate road trip through Ireland, keeping detailed documents and notes that we’ve since put together into an easy-to-read, easy-to-follow guide book to cruising around Ireland!
We did all of the hard work of research and planning for you so you don’t have to.
Even though Ireland is renowned for its ‘laid back’ and ‘easy going’ pace, planning your trip is still absolutely important. I remember well the time when I tried to book a flight to Dublin, well in advance only to find that all flights for that day were full – happened to be the day of the All Ireland Hurling finals in Dublin! Cruising Ireland gives you all the details you need to know to ensure you are aware of all the sporting and tourism events (including the many incredible cultural festivals that Ireland is world famous for!)
Don’t Let This Be You!
If you’ve ever avoided a trip to Ireland because of fears that this could happen to you, or something even worse, then read on: How You Can Easily Avoid Travel Problems And Enjoy a Stress Free Road Trip Around Ireland: Don’t be fooled – there is more to Ireland than pubs and leprechauns, but you don’t need to spend weeks stressing over how to get there and experience it all, and you don’t need to pay for expensive group tours and all-inclusive vacations if you know the basics. Did you know that the majority of driver’s licenses are valid for driving in Ireland and that most people aren’t required to obtain an international driver’s license to drive in Ireland? Do you know which months are considered most favorable for traveling to Ireland?
Before You Go

- What makes Ireland such a great place for a road trip?
- Why drive yourself instead of joining a guided-tour or using public transportation?
- How do you know whether you need a Visa, Passport or how long you are allowed to stay?
- What kind of travel insurance is required or recommended?
- What countries are required to obtain an international driver’s license to legally drive in Ireland?
- How do you receive travel alerts or ensure it’s safe to travel to Ireland?
- How much luggage can you bring on the plane or into your rental vehicle once in Ireland?
- What months are more favorable for travel to Ireland and what about inclement weather conditions?
- How do you plan your driving routes before arriving in Ireland and where do you get Ireland road maps?
“Visiting Ireland was a real highlight for us – and even though we had a great time enjoyed it immensely, if we’d read ‘Cruising Ireland’ before we went the trip would have been even better. Following the guides it provides and all the wonderful tips and notes makes this a must read for anyone contemplating a driving holiday to Ireland”

How to Drive on the Left Side of the Road when you’re used to driving on the right!
When you purchase ‘Cruising Ireland’ you’ll also receive a copy of the video – ‘Right Side of the Car, Left Side of the Road’ which puts you in the driver’s seat of a car driving on the left side of the road when you are used to driving on the right! You see, Ireland (and all other countries in the British Isles) drive on the left side of the road (in cars that have the steering wheel on the right side). This can be a little confusing at first for drivers from most other parts of the world!
In this video you’ll get to see examples of most driving situations (travelling through intersections, turning left and right, moving through the dreaded ‘Roundabouts’ as well as driving on highways) from what you experience now driving on the right and what you’ll experience in Ireland driving on the left side of the road.

‘Right Side of the Car, Left Side of the Road’ is the ideal accompaniment to ‘Cruising Ireland’ as it allows you to experience the changed driving situations you’ll experience on your self-drive tour of Ireland so you can be fully ready for your driving adventure to the Emerald Isle before you even step on the plane!
Normally priced at $47 this video is yours FREE to download onto your computer once you purchase ‘Cruising Ireland’.

Get Organised
When getting organized to travel overseas to Ireland (or to any other country for that matter!) it’s important to spend some time planning for the trip. Doing so often means a better coordinated holiday with much better use of your time and resources (including monetary savings!) and in the end a much more enjoyable time by all those involved. That’s not to say that you should plan how you will spend every minute of every day of your vacation. This is especially the case in a trip to the Emerald Isle. As highlighted in the book ‘Cruising Ireland’, one of the great things about touring Ireland by car is the freedom it gives you to choose as you please – to spend extra time in places that take your fancy or to take the diversion to another site that a local has recommended to you. So planning to the ‘Nth Degree’ before you travel to Ireland is just not worth the trouble in my opinion.
Having said that there are definitely some planning strategies that you should employ and a good way to start this process is to reflect on why it is that you want to travel to Ireland.
It may be that you have Irish ancestors and want to explore your heritage. If that is the case, any research you do into your family history beforehand will certainly have a huge bearing on your trip – influencing the places you visit, the amount of time you’ll need to spend and even some of the people you’ll want to meet. Perhaps you are interested in Irish writers – James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw or William Butler Yeats to name but a few. If that is the case, the more searching you do into the lives of these people will inform your journey. (By the way, has there ever been a country produce such an array of outstanding literary talent as Ireland?)
Anyway, others we know have been extremely interested in Irish music and have directed their travels to take in some of the great music festivals and concerts (and a lot of the pub music as well!). With peace in Northern Ireland now, the relatively recent history of the Troubles has taken some people’s interest and given them a real focus on visiting cities and towns in the north.
Whatever your interest, any research you conduct before you travel to Ireland will certainly make your journey more enjoyable and fulfilling.
Other matters to consider before travelling to Ireland:
Mode of travel to Ireland
You can get to Ireland either by sea (Ferry services from Britain or some locations on mainland Europe) or air (numerous flights into Ireland from various countries around the world).
How long you have
Obviously the amount of time you have for your vacation will dictate to some degree where you go and what you do. ‘Cruising Ireland’ provides a range of options from one week to three weeks and more.
Where will you go?
Aligned with how much time is where you will travel to in the time you have. As mentioned above, ‘Cruising Ireland’ gives you heaps of choices and offers a number of insights into what you’ll need to plan in order to conduct your holiday with the minimum of fuss and maximum of fun.
Car rental
As you would expect, there are numerous options for car rental in Ireland. There are a number of decisions which can be made beforehand including whether to book on-line, what type and size of car will be best for you and your travelling partners, how much you should budget for car rental etc. ‘Cruising Ireland’ provides lots of tips and options to help you make the right, ‘best value for money’ decision.
Driving
Aligned with car rental is your ability to drive in Ireland. For many visitors not familiar with driving on the left side of the road, driving in Ireland may seem a daunting task. There are things you can do to address this however and minimize the chance of any accidents occurring during your trip.
Deciding when to go
Click on the tab “When to Go” above for more information about what you need to consider when deciding when to travel to Ireland.
Where should we stay?
Often the matter that raises most concern for travellers, planning where you will stay should certainly be thought about before your trip, but isn’t something to stress too much about when travelling to Ireland. Again, there are a range of options from hotels, motels, Bed and Breakfasts (B&B’s) as well as Resorts and camping. The beauty about touring Ireland by car is that you can experience all of these options whenever you like. There are numerous tips in ‘Cruising Ireland’ to help you organize all that!
Personal matters
Of course there are a number of personal matters that you will need to consider such as organizing your Passport, making arrangements for any medical treatments or drugs you might require, insurance, luggage, driver’s license (do you need an international driver’s permit?). All of these matters are analysed and check-listed in ‘Cruising Ireland’ to help you make sure you’ve covered off on everything you’ll need to plan before you leave.
Being organized and planned in advance for the things that need to be planned for, will make your trip much more enjoyable. Don’t stress about it though – with ‘Cruising Ireland’ you’ll have the guidebook to help you make planning for your holiday almost as much fun as actually being on your holiday!
When To Go
The Seasons
Most places in the world have their positives and negatives in terms of the best times to visit and enjoy the country as a tourist. Of course, Ireland can be cold in the winter months, but the coastal areas can still be quite pleasant due to the influence of the Atlantic. It really is a personal choice. If you normally live in Bermuda, then travelling to any European country in the winter months might just be too much to handle! Those in Northern European countries and North America might find it very pleasant indeed! Of course, the landscape changes and colours offer quite a spectacular backdrop when on a driving tour of Ireland particularly when one considers the great diversity in landscape types across the island. A more diverse countryside than that in Ireland would be most uncommon. So, obviously the weather you are likely to experience in Ireland is one thing to consider. Don’t be put off by winter though, as there are many positives to being in Ireland during the winter months.
One thing that is important to the car traveller is that the days are shorter during winter months and you are unlikely to travel as far as you might during the lighter periods of the year. So you need to take that into consideration when planning your trip. Also, some accommodation providers (eg: Bed and Breakfast operators) will close during the non-peak periods.
Special Events.
Another factor to consider in relation to timing your trip is the range of festivals and special events that occur. There are numerous events throughout the year. Outdoor events, including many of the Gaelic Sports (Hurling and Football) are seasonal, but many other occasions (music, galleries and the arts in general are scheduled throughout the year).
‘Crusin’ Ireland’ gives you lots of ideas and guides you through the process of deciding when is the best time for you to go to Ireland!
Be There
Being There
So you’ve put together your plan for your trip to Ireland, decided when you’ll go, how you’ll get there, route you intend to take etcetera. You might think that it’s all done, but there are still quite a few additional things you’ll need to consider beyond these matters though. For instance, it’s good to get some appreciation for the things you’ll face upon arrival, such as:
- What to consider when picking up your car (some things that can save you considerable amounts of money)
- More about driving in Ireland (not just the fact that for many people they’ll be driving on the wrong side of the road!). The road signs (in English and Gaelic) are different as are road rules. Driving conditions generally can be vastly different to what you are used to
- Where to get the best tourist information
- Making accommodation bookings when in Ireland
- Shopping, entertainment and great places to eat (and the unique places and food styles that you can experience along your journey!)
All of these topics and much more are included in the book, ‘Cruising Ireland – Your Definitive Guide to Enjoying the Ultimate Road Trip to the Emerald Isle’
There’s a number of other matters to consider such as:
Tipping
Many people have asked us about what the protocols are in relation to tipping in restaurants and for other services that you might obtain in Ireland. From my experience, there is not a strong tipping culture in Ireland. It’s not common in Ireland to see, as you might in other European countries, the term ‘Service Fee’ added to your restaurant or hotel bill. Mostly there is not a strong culture or expectation that service providers will receive a tip. Having said all that though, in my opinion it is always good form to provide some form of gratuity when receiving good service. If you go to a restaurant in Ireland and the wait staff give you very good service, then by all means provide them with a tip. 10-15% of the bill charge would be about right in most cases.
Tax Refunds
You can often reclaim the sales tax or ‘Value-added Tax’ (VAT) for goods you’ve purchased in Ireland. In some countries it can be quite difficult to arrange this, but in Ireland, there aren’t ‘too many hoops to jump through’! Just remember to ask for documentation at the time of purchase. You might be asked to show your passport. Then, all you need to do is make your claim at the airport or ferry terminal before you leave the country.
Accommodation
There are lots of options when considering accommodation in Ireland. There are a range of quality Hotels, Resorts, Motels, Bed and Breakfasts – right through to caravan parks and camping grounds. Whether or not to book accommodation in advance is always a question asked by those looking to travel to Ireland. Of course, it depends upon your circumstances and when you are travelling and what events may be on at the time you are wishing to stay. This topic is covered extensively in ‘Cruising Ireland – Your Definitive Guide to Enjoying the Ultimate Road Trip to the Emerald Isle’. For now though, rest assured there are numerous options and with a bit of pre-planning you shouldn’t face any major issues.
Power Sockets
As many would know, the size, voltage and plug configuration can vary from country to country so you’ll need to ensure you have adaptors for any electrical items (hair dryers, shavers etc) that you might have. Many travel and luggage provider stores will sell adaptors for use in the UK and Ireland. Electricity in Ireland is 220 volts AC.
